Volume Effects
You don't have to choose the riff, and go to volume. If you do that, it effects every one of them that you put down. So, at the very bottom of the screen, there are four lines. Each one has different effects to all the riffs. I will explain the top one, volume. Make a line using X like you're creating a new riff. It will say all the volume stuff, just like if you were doing it to a single riff. Just choose how long you want it to be, the start/end volume or them sperate, then when you play the song, all the riffs will be affected by that in that section. This effect is mostly used for fade out/in for songs.

Song/Riff Creation
This isn't the correct way to do it, but it's my way so I'm explaining it. When ever I'm creating a new riff for a song I'm making, I do it in a simple-ass way. I choose the note that I want in the Riff Creation screen, then I place it in a bunch of random spots and play it. I listen to it, and think to myself, "What can I do to make this sound as good and realistic as possible?" This doesn't go without a little creativity. I have made a total of 26 songs that people have liked so far, and I'm in no state of mind to stop. The only hard part is finding a catchy melody.

Riff Size
In case you don't have the booklet, I'll explain Riff Size just for you. When you're making a drum riff or whatever, and you want two sounds at the same time, it won't let you. So, you have to make it bigger. Exit to the song screen and select the riff. It will say a bunch of things, but choose Resize Riff. Then make it bigger Vertically. Once you go back to the Riff screen, press L2 to choose which "level" you want to use. Then you can even paste notes on top of each other.
